What it is
Glutathione, often abbreviated GSH, is a small peptide made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Cells use it to manage reactive oxygen compounds, support enzyme systems, and help process some drugs and environmental chemicals.
The body makes glutathione on its own. Oral supplements, liposomal products, inhaled preparations, and compounded injections are different formulations with different evidence and risks. A biochemical role inside cells does not by itself prove that extra glutathione improves health or extends life.

How it works
Reduced glutathione donates electrons through its cysteine thiol group. Enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase use that reducing capacity to convert peroxides into less reactive products, while glutathione S-transferases attach glutathione to some compounds so they can be processed and cleared.
After oxidation, two glutathione molecules can form glutathione disulfide, or GSSG. Cells normally recycle GSSG back to reduced glutathione. Blood measurements can show that a formulation changed glutathione stores, but they do not automatically show a meaningful clinical benefit.
What the research actually shows
A randomized, double-blind trial enrolled 54 nonsmoking adults for six months. Oral glutathione increased levels in blood, red cells, plasma, lymphocytes, and cheek cells. In the higher-amount group, six-month increases were about 30% to 35% in several compartments and 260% in cheek cells. These were biomarker outcomes, not proof of disease prevention or longer life.
Earlier evidence was conflicting. A seven-person pharmacokinetic study found that a single 3-gram oral administration did not significantly increase plasma glutathione over 270 minutes. The contrast with later studies shows that formulation, repeated exposure, tissue measured, and study duration matter.
A small randomized trial studied 20 men with obesity, including 10 with type 2 diabetes, for three weeks. Whole-body insulin sensitivity improved in the glutathione group, but muscle mitochondrial hydrogen-peroxide emission and urinary oxidation markers did not. The sample was too small and short to establish diabetes treatment efficacy.
A one-month uncontrolled pilot gave liposomal glutathione to 12 healthy adults. Whole-blood glutathione rose as much as 40%, and several immune and oxidative-stress markers changed. Without a placebo group, those findings remain preliminary and cannot establish that liposomal glutathione prevents illness.
A double-blind pilot trial of intravenous glutathione in 21 people with Parkinson's disease found the treatment was tolerated, but the prespecified motor-score comparison was not statistically significant. Small exploratory signals do not support calling intravenous glutathione an established Parkinson's treatment.
Research on supplements or supervised clinical preparations does not validate retail research vials. There is no good human evidence that injectable glutathione slows aging, improves athletic recovery, produces durable skin lightening, or provides a general detox effect in healthy people.

Glutathione oxidizes after it is placed in solution, especially with heat, light, oxygen, or unsuitable pH. Two checked vendor guides agree on cold, light-protected storage after preparation, but their dry-powder temperatures differ and neither provides a product-specific independent stability assay.
Because formulation and sterility are central to injectable safety, this card uses conservative vendor consensus only. It does not turn a research vial into a sterile drug. The FDA traced reactions in eight patients to compounded injections made from dietary-supplement-grade powder containing excessive bacterial endotoxin.
Safety & cautions
Oral glutathione can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and may interact with medical conditions or treatment plans. Safety evidence is limited for pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, long-term high exposure, and people receiving cancer therapy. Inhaled glutathione can be problematic for people with asthma or sulfite sensitivity depending on formulation.
Injection adds risks that oral studies do not measure: infection, vein injury, allergic reactions, dosing errors, oxidation, and contamination. FDA testing found excessive bacterial endotoxin in powder used for compounded injections after patients developed nausea, vomiting, chills, low blood pressure, breathing difficulty, fever, and shaking. No unapproved research vial should be assumed pharmaceutical-grade or sterile.
