What it is
VIP was first isolated from the intestine, but it also acts as a neurotransmitter throughout the nervous system and lungs. The body releases it locally and breaks it down quickly.
Synthetic VIP and aviptadil have been studied by inhaled, intravenous, and local routes for several conditions. There is no FDA-approved general-purpose VIP injection or nasal product.

How it works
VIP activates VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, which raise cyclic AMP inside target cells. The result can include smooth-muscle relaxation, wider blood vessels, altered gland secretion, and changes in inflammatory signaling.
That broad biology also makes exposure difficult to control. Native VIP is rapidly degraded, and route and formulation strongly affect where it acts.
What the research actually shows
A pulmonary sarcoidosis study gave inhaled VIP to 20 patients for four weeks. It reported changes in bronchoalveolar immune-cell behavior and inflammatory signaling, but the small uncontrolled design could not establish durable clinical benefit.
A randomized clinical experiment in people with migraine found that prolonged VIP infusion provoked migraine attacks more often than placebo. That supports VIP's vascular and headache biology rather than a wellness benefit.
Older human research used intracavernous VIP to study erectile response. Local physiological activity was observed, but this does not support systemic or nasal self-use.
VIP and aviptadil have been investigated in pulmonary hypertension, acute lung injury, and critical respiratory illness. Formulations and trial designs differ, and the evidence has not produced a broadly approved VIP medicine in the United States.
Native VIP is vulnerable to rapid enzymatic degradation. Liposomal and modified analog research exists partly because ordinary VIP has a short biological lifetime and difficult delivery.
Claims for mold illness, chronic inflammatory response syndrome, immune reset, or cognitive enhancement are not supported by large controlled trials.

Two technical suppliers specify frozen storage near -20°C for VIP reagents. One describes the peptide as hygroscopic and light-sensitive, and another advises avoiding repeated freezing and thawing.
These reagent directions do not validate a nasal or injectable preparation. VIP degrades readily, so formulation-specific instructions matter more than generic retail claims.
Safety & cautions
VIP can widen blood vessels and affect heart rate, blood pressure, airway tone, bowel activity, and headache pathways. Plausible acute effects include flushing, dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, palpitations, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Human safety data are route-specific and limited. Cardiovascular disease, migraine, pregnancy, interacting blood-pressure medicines, and unapproved product quality are important unknowns.
